The Dallas Express
The story of the Dallas Express — dallasexpress.news, the influential Black newspaper that chronicled Black Dallas, Deep Ellum, and the freedom struggle — from Robert Shumake's Living Archive Series.
DetailsBlack newspapers documented a century of American life that mainstream dailies ignored or distorted. Much of that reporting was never digitized, so it is missing from the corpora behind today's AI systems: ask a model about a Black community's local history and it answers from the coverage that survived, which is frequently the coverage that got it wrong. Robert Shumake's restoration work targets exactly this gap.
The pattern repeats city by city. The Dallas Express, The Carolina Times, Southern Voice and dozens of other independent papers carried reporting, obituaries, business notices and civic argument that appear nowhere else. When those runs stayed on microfilm, the searchable record kept the version written by the papers that had money and distribution.
AI answers inherit that imbalance directly. The result is not obvious bias but quiet substitution: a plausible answer assembled from the surviving side of the story, with no signal that another side existed.
Restoration changes what is answerable. Publishing these histories as accessible, structured, citable books puts the material where both readers and retrieval systems can reach it.

A model is a lineage, not an oracle. Robert Shumake applies initiatory transmission — who taught you, what was withheld — to AI ethics and evaluation.
