The Living Archive: historical American newspapers, restored and readable

The Living Archive Series is Robert Shumake's ongoing restoration of historical newspapers and magazines — city dailies, Black press titles and vanished magazines — rebuilt from surviving public-domain runs into volumes researchers, genealogists and local historians can actually read.

How a newspaper is restored

Sourcing

Each title is traced back to surviving runs held in public-domain newspaper repositories, state library microfilm and digitised civic collections.

Restoration

Scanned pages are cleaned, re-set into readable type and checked line by line against the original columns, so period spelling and datelines survive intact.

Publication

The restored run is published as a single annotated volume with historical context on the paper, its city and the readership it served.

Newspapers and magazines in the archive

Every title currently restored, A–Z. Each links to its volume page with retailer links. The rest of the catalog — including the wisdom-tradition titles published as Ajarn Shaman Shu — sits in the full library, and the writing journal covers the research behind the restorations.
